Mrs. McDonald
At the end of 3rd grade, all students will have the opportunity to see and try out both band and orchestra instruments. Students will attend a demonstration assembly at their school and then have the opportunity to try out their favorite instruments at a Petting Zoo before deciding if they would like to join the program. Students who choose to play a band instrument will begin lessons with Mrs. McDonald at the beginning of their 4th grade year. All 4th - 6th grade band students will receive a 30 minute small group lesson once per 4-day cycle. Several performance opportunities are available for each of the three ensembles:
6th grade band will rehearse as a group during the school day on days 2 and 4 of each cycle. 4th and 5th grade bands will travel to the middle school for group rehearsals several times before each concert. All performances except for the Memorial Day Parade are mandatory for band students.
4th and 5th grade students will receive standards-based grades based on their attendance and participation in lessons as well as their practice habits. 6th grade students will receive letter grades based on their attendance and preparedness for rehearsals and lessons as well as their participation in concerts and other classroom activities like Listening Days. Participation in the Memorial Day Parade as well as other performance opportunities throughout the year will count for extra credit for 6th graders.
